Lesser Town Square with the church of Saint Nicholas

The Lesser Town Square (Malostranské náměstí in Czech) is a central square of the Lesser Town of Prague. It has a rectangular shape as a whole, but it is divided into two parts (upper western part and lower easter part) by the monumental Baroque Church of Saint Nicholas, which is one of the best known landmarks of Prague. Apart from this church there are several interesting buildings on the square, inluding the Sternberg palace, the Smiřický palace and Malostranská beseda, which used to be the town hall of the Lesser Town, until in 1784 it was joined with the other towns of Prague to form a single Royal City of Prague.

The Royal Way goes through the square: it enters from the Mostecká Street in the southeast corner of the square, then it goes along the southern side of the square to its western part and it leaves the square in its northwest corner where Nerudova Street begins.

There used to be a statue of field-marshal Josef Radetzky in the lower part of the square, and it was therefore called Radetzky square for a long time. On the upper part there is a Marian Column, built in 1717 in thanksgiving for the ending of a plague.

In the lower part of the square there is a tram stop on a line between Újezd and Malostranská.
